I created ZEN of CRISIS (Module 1), after I left a difficult, tenured career teaching in academia. While coping with the workplace bullying, I developed stress symptoms: anxiety, difficulty sleeping and depression. My entire life was affected, my health suffered, every area of my life was negatively impacted. As an educator I always want to learn and know there is always a solution! I quite like the podcasts, mp3′s and cd, work of Kelly Howell over at Brainsync.com. She has a really soothing voice and produces high quality audio as MP3 for relaxation, meditation and creativity among others. Here are two that might be of interest to my readers: one on achieving deep meditation and one for relieving stress. But click the link to see her page called “Theater of the MInd” which has really useful and interesting podcasts by spiritual and inspirational authors. Some of the folks she’s interviewed include Judith Orloff, M.D., Richard Bandler, and Caroline Myss. Also some lesser know but still very interesting new authors. Usually they are interview format and she asks really insightful questions of each guest whether they are discussing energy healing, intuition, law of attraction or meditation. That will give you a taste of what she offers, lots of learnng in a refreshing way.

I find audio a wonderful way to learn by listening rather than always-by looking ie. TV or videos, one can move around or settle in an take it in. These are not traditional Buddhist type meditations but a good start. See my resource page for more tradtional or classical guidance on mindfulness, vipassana meditation. To see clearly; insight meditation; the simple and direct practice of moment-to-moment mindfulness. Through careful and sustained observation, we experience for ourselves the ever-changing flow of the mind/body process.
When practicing Vipassana meditation technique we observe the thoughts, feelings, sensations in the body with calm, clear non-reactive awareness over and over. Vipassana is done primarily in seated meditation on a cushion or in a straight back chair; also one can do specific walking meditation and ultimately continuous daily life mindfulness develops. The latter deepens over years of meditation practice, but results show up after each practice in how we feel. It is very important to maintain a regular seated meditation practice, as it’s the support of the daily mindfulness. Three times a week is a great practice, add daily if that works for your lifestyle and you feel drawn to-then you are ready for it. Otherwise you will find as my teachers and I have that slowly we lose the quality of depth and insights when we don’t do a dedicated sitting practice.
Mindfulness in Plain English: Revised and Expanded EditionThe historical Buddha first taught vipassana meditation techniques over 2,500 years ago and did not intend for it to be a “religion.” Because all suffer, it was meant as a Way out of suffering and in the greater sense is open to all, whether identified as Buddhist or not. The tradition that preserves the early teachings is the Theravada tradition, practiced in countries to the present day. In places like Burma, Thailand, Sri Lhanka and other South-east Asian regions that is the form of Buddhism practiced.

The practice of Vipassana meditation helps us to calmly see the changing, self-less, unsatisfactory nature of all experience. The latter quality does not mean there is not pleasure but it is fleeting, and ultimately will undergo change to it’s opposite and hopefully back again! This causes us to cling though, we like the chocolate brownie, now it’s gone, we liked our girlfriend or boyfriend now they are gone too!
